Women in the media: the most stubborn bastion of misogyny.

SlutWalking gets rolling after cop's loose talk about provocative clothing

When a police officer from Toronto went on a routine visit to Osgoode Hall Law School to advise the students on personal safety, little did he know that he would unwittingly inspire a movement that has caught fire across Canada and the US.

“You know, I think we’re beating around the bush here,” Michael Sanguinetti began, blandly enough, as he addressed the 10 students who turned up for the pep talk. Then he said: “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this – however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) reveals her own abortion in opposition to the Pence Amendment.

I Stand with Planned Parenthood

The House voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding. They cut funding for HIV tests, cancer screenings, birth control and more, putting millions of women and families at risk. We can’t let it go unanswered. It’s time for us to stand with Planned Parenthood. Sign the open letter to the reps who voted for this bill - and to the senators who still have a chance to stop it.

A woman should not control her looks, I should control my urges toward an uncovered woman.

Contraceptive of the Day: What you did there: I see it.
[thd.]

This actually left me speechless with anger.
Clearly, it’s this simple: the only reason why we have unplanned or unwanted pregnancies is because women can’t keep their legs closed.  So glad to see we’ve progressed beyond 1950’s era stereotypes about women and sexuality, guys.

Early puberty in girls doubles in a decade

Twice as many white girls in the US reach puberty aged 7 as a decade ago. No one is sure why this should be the case, but obesity and exposure to chemicals that mimic the female hormone oestrogen are the prime suspects.

What’s this? An anti-rape campaign that focuses on preventing rape instead of preventing women leaving the house? Holy crap it’s Christmas.

I thought it said ‘hunting’ not ‘hurting’, which would put a whole different spin on the campaign. But yes, good work.

Kudos for including a same-sex couple in there too.

Hollywood to Actors: No Surgery, Please

Television executives at Fox Broadcasting, for example, say they have begun recruiting more natural looking actors from Australia and Britain because the amply endowed, freakishly young-looking crowd that shows up for auditions in Los Angeles suffers from too much sameness.

mumble mumble: A dead bird. Rape apologists.

I saw a dead bird on the grass in front of our office today.

I suspect it had flown into our building, it being all glass with that shiny exterior, north of the city with nothing else over even 3 stories for blocks.

I’m guessing the bird was never told to look for patches of sky a little…

Here’s a woman’s perspective: It’s not about the clothes.  It’s never about the clothes.  It’s about the power and the control.  The clothes are just the excuse, part of the blame-the-victim dynamic that frequently seems to crop up when sexual assault is involved.  It doesn’t matter what a woman is wearing; NOTHING excuses rape.
